Since its launch in 2023, the Chapel and Heritage Fund has supported a range of projects dedicated to preserving the school’s heritage. One such project, the restoration of the WW2 tablet in time for Remembrance Week in 2025, highlighted the importance of giving the WW1 tablet the same treatment.
Generous donations to the Chapel and Heritage Fund on Giving Day enabled us to confidently arrange for the cleaning and re-lettering of the WW1 Memorial tablet as part of our ongoing plans for safeguarding precious heritage items round the school.
As well as re-lettering the 57 names on the WW1 tablet, meticulous re-gilding has highlighted the faded original features. The engraved school seal, on which the design of the Chapel’s East window is based, is now fully visible again in the heading detail, as is the dedication to the ‘Old Boys who gave their lives’.
The work undertaken has successfully revealed both memorial tablets as they would have been seen when first unveiled in 1924 and 1954. Our sincere thanks go to the team at the War Memorial Conservation Co., and particularly to their on-site craftsman who undertook the painstaking work with such care.
The work is now complete, and we offer our heartfelt thanks to all of you who have supported - and continue to support - the Chapel and Heritage Fund.
Thank you.
