The Service of Remembrance this year will take place on Wednesday 5 November, a weekday service that enables Old Breconians to join the school in a form of service that was first held at Christ College on 11 November 1919.
As always, an important part of the service is to remember the Old Breconians in the Roll of Honour. Though new information has resulted in names being added to the Roll over the years, most of the names of those read during the service are inscribed on the two memorial tablets in the Antechapel. The upper 1914-1918 tablet was unveiled in 1924; the lower 1939-1945 tablet was dedicated in 1954, when the border that now surrounds them was added.
The 36 names on the 1939-1945 tablet have recently showed signs of rapid fading. In an ongoing audit of heritage objects, the work was identified earlier this year as a heritage project and funding from the Chapel and Heritage Fund was approved by the Foundation Committee.
We are delighted to report that during the Michaelmas half-term break the names were relettered and the gilt detailing restored. Thoughtfully undertaken by War Memorial Conservation Co. of Cardiff, we are particularly appreciative of the meticulous care with which the work was completed on site.
The conservation work could not be more timely. In a year when we commemorate the end of the Second World War, the tablet is now rightly restored to its original condition and honours those who are remembered there.
We offer our heartfelt gratitude to all our Chapel and Heritage Fund donors.
Thank you.
