Old Breconian and Pembrokeshire pumpkin farmer - R Hugh L Thomas (SHR, 64-68) - member of the Hawkstone Farmers Choir which WON Britains Got Talent this weekend.

Hugh Thomas, 75, was the senior member of the 32-strong Hawkstone Farmers’ Choir which topped the viewers’ poll after the grand final last night, Saturday, May 30.

The choir was originally formed by Jeremy Clarkson for a beer advertisement, but then developed into a voice for agricultural mental health.

It will now donate a significant proportion of its £250,000 winnings to mental health charities supporting the farming community.

Hugh and his wife Rachel own Pembrokeshire Sunflower Farm in Moylegrove, which commented on Facebook: “Amazing evening #thehawkstonefarmerschoir winning #britainsgottalent - fantastic evening! Massive massive thank you to everyone who voted!"

Hugh, who was chosen for the choir out of 600 applicants, previously said of his BGT experience: "I had to pinch myself—this was really happening to an old boy from Pembrokeshire!"

An emotional Clarkson was in the audience as the choir were the third out of ten acts to take to the stage to perform 'Welcome Home' - a powerful original farming-themed number against a backdrop of the changing seasons.

The group, who won through from the fifth semi-final, had previously been judge Amanda Holden’s Golden Buzzer choice.

She told them: "You have made me cry again. I could not be prouder.

“Your harmonies were beautiful."

Fellow judge Alesha Dixon said: “People really love you, they really warm to you," and praised the original song, saying it ‘felt familiar'.

Simon Cowell described the performance as ‘stunning, heartfelt and joyous’.

He added: “Britain’s Got Talent is about celebrating talent, and tonight that was absolutely on the money/”

More than a million votes were cast by the public, with the choir and drone act Celestial announced in the top two by presenters Ant and Dec before the jubilant choir were crowned winners.

They will now perform at the Royal Variety Performance in November.
