Those who have read our previous story on the construction of six new cricket nets will have been aware of the planned opening ceremony on 26 April. We are delighted to bring you news of the official opening of the nets.
On the sunny Saturday afternoon of Old Breconian Day, Pupils, Staff, OBs and parents gathered for the official opening of the Colin Kleiser Nets.
At around midday Old Breconians made their way from Chapel to the already busy nets, where boys and girls were warming up for afternoon matches. The Head, Gareth Pearson, said a few warm words in celebration of everything Colin Kleiser has done for cricket at CCB. He also thanked all those who have worked hard to enable the project to go ahead – our generous donors and the team behind planning and construction.
It was then time for Anne Kleiser to unveil the gleaming new sign ‘The Colin Kleiser Nets’, by removing the Pavilion flag which had been covering it. It was a privilege to welcome Anne, son Will and grandson Brinley to share the occasion.
The day wasn’t just a ceremonial celebration of cricket, an hour after the Colin Kleiser Nets were opened the 1st XI took on Abergavenny CC in a match which saw a 151-run partnership for A J (101 not out) and Captain Toby P (56). A Century hadn’t been scored in front of the Pavilion since Ollie Newey back in 2019.
A fitting performance on a day to honour and celebrate the man who lived and breathed cricket, and gave his life and soul to the school. We are looking forward to a great season of cricket ahead, and are confident that the extensive use of the Colin Kleiser Nets will facilitate the development of young cricketers.
