After an enjoyable 2023 reunion dinner for the Class of 2013 on the Saturday evening, we hosted OB Day for older Old Breconians on Sunday 14 May.
Numbers were down this year for the Sunday event but all those in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the day. Over drinks in the sun and lunch in the Dining Hall, there was lots of chat about memories of days past. Unfortunately because of inclement weather the previous week, COBS were unable to play their annual match against the school 1st XI.
We owe thanks to Revd Denis I A Brazil (SHR, 53-60) for his Homily based on Luke 17: 11-19 and memories of days at CCB and, as always, to The Revd Peter D Godsall (SHR, 66-72) - Old Breconian Chaplain - for conducting the service. We also enjoyed singing some favourite hymns which as always included 'the Swerver’! We were also treated to an excellent solo from Charlie G - Giordani’s 'Caro Mio Ben'.
On the way out of Chapel we managed to get A B C Cooper (SHR, 62-65) in the same place as current pupil James H. Some of you will know that Tony Cooper holds the longest Sports Day record. With no records broken on Saturday’s Sports Day, his Junior Javelin record set in 1962 still stands: 131ft 2ins / 39.9m. He is pictured here with James, who throws hammer for Wales and is coached by Old Breconian Ryan Spencer-Jones (SDA, 97-05).
Again this year, all enjoyed a thought-provoking Archive display including House, team and informal photographs, jackets and rugby shirts. Of particular interest was the Senior International Hockey shirt on display donated by OB Harold E D Griffiths (ORC, 36-45) who was there to see it again.
You can read more about the Archive display in Felicity’s post.
Special thanks go to the Head for hosting the day and to the Holroyd Howe team for an excellent lunch.
