OBGS v Old Llandovarians
Carmarthen GC, Friday 30th August 2024
With several OBGS stalwarts unable to play, it was a depleted but keen and undaunted team that turned up at Carmarthen Golf Club to take on the Old Llandovarians. Regulars Nigel Jones, Peter Knill, Russell Davies, Kevin Noble and Rhodri Parry were boosted by the very welcome, and greatly appreciated, attendance of three recent OBs making their OBGS debuts; Tom McLean, Jack Lock and Matt Reynolds.
Before the match had even started Matt provided a highlight with his wide-eyed response to seeing his handicap recorded as 13 instead of the 30 he had asked for (age getting to my hearing now, too, it seems); Jack’s proud unveiling of his newly upgraded bag and clubs hinted at a thriving cash economy at Cross Keys RFC and Tom generously agreed to undertake the marshalling of all U25 OB golfers for future events (though, to be fair, he has only found this out on reading this report).
So, to the match; a heavy morning mist cleared during breakfast, leaving a clear sunny sky over a very well-presented course with fast and challenging greens. Wily Old Llandovarian regulars were also boosted by a few from younger generations and the match, although tight and not without opportunities to win some games, proved to be beyond us on the day and we, unfortunately, suffered a spirited, but deflating, whitewash, given the effort given by all to come and play.
All the games were played, and the post-match meal was shared, with pleasant, sporting, good humour throughout. A good day was had by all.
We look forward to regaining the cup at Cradoc next year.
The presence, and promises of future attendance, of a lot of newcomers to the OBGS this year, particularly from younger generations (and, of course, David Manwaring) has been a fantastic bonus to all the events and will, hopefully, be a boon for the OBGS going forward.
