Any Old Breconian who finds themselves in Chapel in this second half of the Summer Term will soon realise that there is something missing. The medieval stalls that have long resided in the Antechapel have disappeared, leaving a space that hasn’t been seen since their temporary removal during the Covid years.

But there is no need to worry. Thanks to the generosity of supporters of the Chapel and Heritage Fund, the stalls and their misericords have been delivered into the safe hands of local craftsman, Noel Gaskell. Some of you will already know the name. Noel is parent of Josh Gaskell (Orchard 2002-2009) and was also responsible for crafting the stunning oak cabinets on the Mezzanine in the Library.

It was a heart-stopping moment to see the stalls raised aloft as they made their way into his first floor workshop. But with Noel planning operations and the expert Estates team on hand, we were all confident that they would reach their destination without a hitch. Now all three pairs of stalls – the dog and the skeleton, the angel and lion, and the unicorn and owl – will undergo appropriate treatment and restoration in Noel’s expert hands before they are returned to their rightful place.

This essential work has been made possible by donors to the Chapel and Heritage Fund. With restoration of three paintings and repairs to the Chapel door similarly imminent, this important fund continues to actively maintain the physical legacy of the school’s history. We are grateful to all those who have made a real difference through their generosity.

Particular thanks must go to Charles H Morgan (Orchard 1965-71). His munificent pledge on Giving Day 2024 inspired donors and boosted the Chapel and Heritage Fund for the coming year, enabling us to begin planning future projects. Thank you, Charles.

We will keep you posted with news of the return of the stalls. In the meantime you can read more about the stalls themselves in the Archive News: It's Good to be back!
