The Pupil Opportunity Fund, one of our four Giving Day funds, has a single clear purpose: to provide a school facility that will benefit current pupils.

We started small in 2024 and with the help of generous donors we achieved the St Nick’s Reading Shed. Originally requested by Gareth Bufton, Head of Prep, it’s a calm, welcoming nook where pupils can be transported into the world of books in the glorious setting of the St Nick’s playground.

Building on that success, Giving Day 2026 has its sights set on something much bigger.

Our 2026 goal for the Pupil Opportunity Fund is to raise £20,712 for the installation of air conditioning in the auditorium of the Neuadd. This important project has been inspired by the dedicated work and specialist expertise of David Grant, our volunteer Theatre Technician.

Also known to current pupils as the name behind the legendary DRG cross-country route, 'DRG' is remembered by many Old Breconians as a Chemistry teacher, Director of Bench Polishing, fell runner, and mastermind of the SiFW technical crew.

If you were ever involved in school theatre - on stage or behind the scenes - you’ll remember the long hours, the pressure, and the teamwork that made it all happen.

Thanks in large part to DRG's commitment, today’s Neuadd is a technically advanced space. The venue hosts packed performances and major events, but it is often uncomfortably warm for audiences, performers, and crew alike. With your help, installation of air conditioning will immediately improve comfort, performance quality, and the experience for everyone who uses the Neaudd.

Find out about sweltering temperatures during productions directly from DRG.

To show his personal commitment to the project, David Grant has pledged to add 10% of all donations made to the Pupil Opportunity Fund up to the value of installation.

In support of the project, current parents Mike and Samantha Pearce have generously matched the first £1,000 donated to the Fund.

Join them in making a practical difference with lasting impact by supporting DRG's Neuadd Appeal via the Pupil Opportunity Fund.
