Christ College welcomes Professor Emyr Lewis 24 November 2023

A highlight in the calendar since its inauguration in 2003, the annual Lord Atkin Lecture has always been much anticipated by pupils, staff and guests. This year's lecture, sponsored by Blake Morgan, was no exception.

Entitled "I protest, even if I do it alone - Lord Atkin, Liberty and the Rule of Law", the 2023 Lecture was given by Professor Emyr Lewis, Professor of Law and Head of the Department of Law an Criminology at Aberytswyth, Wales' oldest law school. The packed audience was particularly delighted by the way Professor Lewis enthused the notoriously challenging group of listeners, an audience that includes practitioners with decades of experience in law as well as interested guests and Sixth Form pupils who may be considering a law career.

In a stimulating and inspiring evening, Professor Lewis focused on the impact of Lord Atkin’s dissenting judgement in Liversidge v Andersen [1941] and made thought-provoking topical links that emphasised the importance of Lord Atkin's dissenting voice in that judgement.

The lecture, reproduced on the Community Hub with Professor Lewis's kind permission, is now available in full for your interest and enjoyment.

On behalf of Christ College, I would like to thank Emyr Lewis for his inspiring and thought-provoking lecture. It was an opportunity to reflect upon the actions of an Old Breconian who has shaped modern social belief simply through his moral convictions.

The lecture was inspiring for all who attended. Prof. Lewis spoke in a way that both people inside and outside of the profession could clearly understand, one to remember for all Breconians.

Head of School, Mark
