Off to the Nationals!

It’s been a successful 2022-23 season for the Girls Hockey XI.

A victorious home match against Llandovery was a particular highlight in the fixture calendar in the first part of the season. Played on the newly surfaced Astro, the 3-2 result was displayed on the new scoreboard sponsored by NFU Mutual and Honddu Vets. The early evening game sparked excitement amongst current pupils and drew a crowd of enthusiastic supporters for the 57th match against our old rivals. For those of you with an eye for the stats, the current tally for this long-standing Girls Hockey XI fixture is 57 matches played: 27 wins for Brecon; 22 wins for Llandovery and 8 draws. 

Sarah Hardman, Head of Girls Games and Director of Hockey, speaks proudly of the skills and dedication of the team, led this year by co-Captains, Floss and Meg. With enough players for three senior teams, regular fixtures for the U12-U16 and all of Alway and Y9 pupils playing hockey, there is inevitably more success yet to come.

A more recent highlight has been the tense route to the Nationals. After qualifying for Regionals in a tight match against Llanfair Ceirenion, the Girls 1st XI went on to be unbeaten in the National Semi-Finals. Next week they face Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg at the National Hockey Centre in Pontcanna.  

If you are nearby on Tuesday afternoon, come along and support the team in what promises to be a thrilling final.
